Gary Lawson has declared “the job is only half done” for the Blackjacks at the Asia Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast.

Lawson has celebrated his long-awaited return to the New Zealand side by winning the men’s pairs title with Shannon McIlroy.

It was one of three golds the Blackjacks secured in the four week one disciplines, with Jo Edwards winning the women’s singles after Val Smith (skip), Katelyn Inch, Kirsten Edwards and Wendy Jensen had won the women’s fours.

Ali Forsyth (skip), Jamie Hill and Mike Kernaghan also claimed silver in the men’s triples.

After a rest day the second week of the tournament starts tomorrow (Monday), with section play in the men’s singles and fours, and women’s pairs and triples.

“It’ll be disappointing to undo all the good work that we’ve done this week,” Lawson said.

“It’s really important we get ourselves prepared mentally [and] physically for Monday and have another really good crack.”

He will join Forsyth, Hill and Kernaghan in the New Zealand men’s four, which will play the Philippines, Samoa and Thailand on the first day of section play at Broadbeach Bowls Club.

McIlroy will play at Helensvale tomorrow in the first few rounds of the men’s singles, with the reigning world champion keen to continue from where they left off on Saturday.

“If we go into next week and we do the same thing and we win a couple of golds that sends a bit of a statement to the rest of the world that we can do this,” McIlroy said.

Two more golds would equal the Blackjacks’ best ever return from an Asia Pacific Championships in 1995, when New Zealand won five in Dunedin.

Smith, Inch and Jensen will start section play in the women’s triples at Musgrave Hill, while Jo Edwards and Kirsten Edwards will combine in the women’s pairs, with their first three matches at Club Helensvale.

“I haven’t played a lot with Kirsten,” Edwards said.

“I played a bit [with her] a few years ago, but nothing recently so you know I think like the fours have done keep that enjoyment up.

“I just hope no one asks me if I’m her mother again!”

There a three days of section play in each discipline, before the quarter-finals and semis on Thursday and the gold medal matches on Friday.
