Paritutu’s Darren Goodin, Adam Collins, Rodger Hassall and Nathan Goodin, along with Takapuna’s Lisa Dickson, Lauren Mills, Robyne Walker and Anne Dorreen have emerged victorious in the National Champion of Champion Fours, rounding out a busy month on the carpet throughout the country.
After events in Dunedin and Wellington in the last fortnight, play returned to the Bowls Hastings venue for the fours, with more than 20 provinces turning out to bid for national honours. Poor weather conditions and flight cancellations forced the withdrawal of several sides in the lead-up to play, causing some last minute changes to the playing programme.
The men’s final saw the Paritutu line-up continue their winning ways, defeating a spirited Martinborough side of Garry Muriwai, Mark O’Brien, Scott Mackenzie and Hayden Frew, rounding off an unbeaten campaign for the Taranaki-based side.
In what panned out to be a topsy-turvy game, it was Goodin and his team who held their nerve to the end, collecting back to back multiples towards the latter stages of the fixture and closing out the win in comfortable style.
Despite Martinborough’s best efforts, which included picking up a seven count at the midway point, they were unable to hold back the strong Paritutu charge, featuring two upcoming young stars in Collins and Goodin, both showing huge promise and announcing themselves as ones to watch going forward.
Beaten semi-finalists include West End’s Barrie Andrews, Garry Ford, Tom Taiaroa and Shayne Chisnall and Tauranga South’s Anthony Ouellet, Eric Pattillo, Denis Duncan and Stu Owen – both teams receiving a bronze medal for their efforts.
Other qualifiers include Hillcrest four Stephen Liddington, Mort Jones, Rauf Mohammed and Francois Van Staden, local hopes Omaranui skipped by Grant Sargison and the powerhouse Pt Chevalier four of Aiden Takarua, Alex Reed, Harry Davis and Colin Williams, succumbing to the eventual winners in a titanic tussle, 12-10.
On the neighbouring rink, the Takapuna four proved too strong in the women’s final against the Pirongia quartet of Gaylene Kanawa, Denise Te Momo, Sheryl Olsen and Vicki Coll, with Dickson spearheading her side to the silverware, 17-14.
The pre-tournament favourites of Karen Hema, Karen De Jongh, Lisa Prideaux and Linda Ralph of Carlton Cornwall qualified, but were unable to repeat last week’s efforts, coming unstuck against a determined Priongia force, with the Waikato-based representatives registering a solitary point win, 12-11.
Beaten semi-finalists in the women’s field include Kensington’s Patricia Murray, Skye Renes, Sue Rokstad and Ann Herbert, alongside the Palmerston North four of Mere Fryer, Fiona Mancer, Marilyn Free and Emily Gray – also receiving bronze medals for their efforts.
Other qualifiers include Martinborough’s Tanya Wheeler, Janalle Frew, Yvonne Riley and Rozanna Muriwai, and Tauranga South hopefuls Heather Gilbert, Pat Andrews, Ceri Fenton and Chris Allan.
The fours’ action completes the National Champion of Champion series for the 2021/22 season, with the following teams in the winning circles throughout the month of July.
