The Naenae Bowling Club will be a hum of activity this weekend as the venue plays host to the National Interclub 7s competition, both Division One and Two.
Held as the final part of a three-staged series, regional champions from across the country will descend on the capital in a bid to be crowned New Zealand’s best interclub side. Prior to arriving in Wellington, participating teams had formerly won their way through the local interclub competition, before topping the ladder at their respective regional finals.
In the men’s field, Division One will see some powerhouse clubs lining up, with multiple winner Eastbourne among the mix representing zone 4, while the steady line-up from Belfast will fly the flag in a zone typically dominated by Stoke.
Furthest south, Zone 6 will be represented by the Dunedin-based Fairfield club, who leapfrogged all opposition in the final round of the regional play-offs to secure their spot among the heavy weights.
Joining Belfast, Eastbourne and Fairfield, former New Zealand representative Dwayne Cameron will lead the charge for his Hinuera side, while South Auckland’s Mangere outfit boasts strong firepower across all disciplines.
In other line-ups, the Division One women’s field looks set to be a showdown between the Blackjack littered Burnside seven, and the fierce southern contenders in blue and white, Te Rangi Bowling Club from Invercargill.
Burnside powerhouse siblings Mandy, left and Angela Boyd will be hoping to lead their club side to national honours this weekend, as they feature as a critical part of the Burnside hopefuls.
Boasting Commonwealth Games skipper Mandy Boyd, among former Blackjack in sister Angela, the Burnside ladies will prove tough to overcome, though with a spirited regional performance from Te Rangi and Northland’s Mangawhai Club, the Zone 5 contenders can expect plenty of competition along the way.
Division Two will see South Canterbury’s country club Fairlie take to the competition for the first time, while Blaketown, Eketahuna, Omanu, Royal Oak and Wanganui-based Aramoho, will all be joining the quest to be named the Division 2 National Men’s Champions.
The women’s field in Division Two will host zone one qualifiers Carlton Cornwall, zone two’s Counties Manukau, zone three’s representatives West End, Bulls flying the flag for zone 4, while South Island hopefuls Burnside and South Otago Town and Country Club will stand proud for zone 5 and 6 respectively.
The competition will be held in a straight round-robin format with the best club in each respective division being crowned on Sunday afternoon.
