Country Kid a Rising Star

Thirteen-year-old Logan Dunn travels from Hawarden in rural North Canterbury to Kaiapoi to play bowls at the Kaiapoi Outdoor Bowls Club. With the local Hawarden Club only having 14 members there isn’t the level of regular competition he or others in his family require, so the Dunn family they face a 90 minutes round trip every time they need or want to play. The journey takes about 45 each way but for the Dunn family they consider it part of life when you live in the country and you want to play your sport of choice at a higher level.

The Hawarden Bowling Club Crack-a-Jack competition is where Logan and his brother Jordan had their interest in the game of bowls ignited, they were introduced to the game by their mother when she needed extra players for her team and as the saying goes the rest is history.

A Hawarden Area School pupil, Logan is a first-year player and has been competing in the BLK National Open Championships in Dunedin. He entered in the singles and fours competition, and though he didn’t win any of his singles games he certainly let his opposition know he was there to compete. He was also part of the Kaiapoi team that played in the fours competition, along with his father Jason and experienced players Kerry Becks and Paddy Stewart.

Jason played bowls in Sydney several years ago but gave the game away for several years after he moved into the Hawarden area but now the whole family play at the Kaiapoi Outdoor Club

Logan has had a go at other sports such as rugby but is now thinking he be concentrating on bowls so it looks like we are likely to see more of Logan around the greens in the near future.
