There was action aplenty at six venues over the weekend as record numbers of players fought for the New Zealand Professional Bowls Associations qualifier spots in the World Indoor Singles and Pairs. In Hamilton, this year’s World Under 25 Singles rep Jesse Russell dropped a set in his first two matches but got better and better as the day went on overpowering Bay of Plenty’s David Jones 12-2, 10-2 in the Singles final. The next day, coordinator Chris Lourie and partner Tony Fabling retained their Finals Weekend positions from last year again winning the Hamilton World Pairs qualifier beating Bay of Plenty rookie Nicholas Tomsett and Waikato’s Debbie White 8-4, 12-3 in the final.

Top exponents of the small indoor bowls game Gavin Scrivener and Aidan Zittersteijn opened up a rivalry in PBA clashing on both days of competition in New Plymouth. 20 year old Zittersteijn partnered with 19 year old Ryan Vincent beat the Whanganui pair of Scrivener and Phil Corney in the final of the pairs 10-1, 1-9, 2-0 but Scrivener turned the tables in the semifinal of the Singles on Sunday before going on to beat Steve Walker in the final 9-6, 9-5.

This year’s World Indoor Pairs representative Tony Terry now looks the player to beat in Hastings pipping the previously in-form Dean Drummond in the second round before going on to win the Singles qualifier proving too consistent for Peter Jones in the final 12-1, 12-4. Terry only needed one drive in the match when he was four shots down but killed the jack gaining a two off the re-spot. Jones however came back with partner Scotty McGavin to win the Pairs on Sunday against another Hawkes Bay-Manawatu combination in Dave Porteous and Steve Love 8-5, 7-6. The highlight for the weekend was a boil-up lunch prepared by the Carlsons and Kupas.

Wairarapa rookie Hayden Frew stole the limelight off a star-studded field in Wellington beating Adam Turner in the Singles final 8-5, 9-4. The form book returned on Sunday with NZ number one Ray Martin and recently-transferred Southlander Caleb Hope beating the new number one woman Clare Hendra and Wellington selector Mike Carroll 4-6, 6-2, 2-0.

Dunedin will run a local finals day on 23rd August to complete each of their qualifiers but from the weekend’s player the four still going for the World Indoor Singles are Ray Webster, Beth Brown, Sheldon Bagrie-Howley from Southland, and Ross Stevens. Webster continued his unbeaten weekend by reaching the last two in the pairs with partner Russell Dawe and will play Canterbury duo Rob Fensom and the new leader for the Rookie of the Year trophy Jeff Nowell in the final.

Invercargill coordinator Craig Merrilees came the closest to winning the Singles and Pairs qualifier double at the weekend but was pipped in the Singles final by Central Otago’s Kelvin Jackson after being up 14-1, 7-4. Jackson played two great conversion shots to win the second set 11-7 and went on to win the tiebreak 2-0 driving the jack in the ditch on the first end and drawing the shot in the second. Merrilees and Shane Elliott had earlier won the Pairs over Murray Swain and Bevan Clark 11-1, 4-4.

The programme which culminates in a Finals Weekend at Remuera can be found at https://www.professionalbowlsassociation.com/branch-news/new-zealand-news/. It had been hoped a Trans-Tasman travel bubble could have opened to allow the annual Australia – New Zealand PBA Challenge to go ahead in Dunedin in September, but the 2020 edition has now been postponed to May 2021. Next year there will be home and away Challenges against the Australians to catch up.

The NZ PBA executive are continuing to monitor the situation in the Northern Hemisphere and may have to adjust travel prizes depending on whether World Bowls Tour events proceed or New Zealanders are allowed to travel to the UK.
