The quarter-finalists have been found in the men’s singles and women’s pairs at the Summerset Nationals in Canterbury, with some notable absentees.

Three-time national singles champion Mike Kernaghan (North East Valley) has been one of number of past winners to exit on the first day of post-section play.

Kernaghan has been upset 21-15 by Chad Grant (Rotorua) in the last 32 of the men’s singles, joining fellow Blackjacks Gary Lawson (Elmwood Park), Chris Le Lievre (Musgrave Hill, Aus) and Seamus Curtin (Stokes Valley) in falling short of the quarter-finals.

Grant was unable to continue his giant-killing in the round of 16, losing 21-18 to 2017 champion Dean Elgar (West End) in a match which finished almost 12 hours after the day’s action began.

Elgar is through to face 1990 winner Terry Scott (North East Valley) in the quarters after Scott outclassed Colin Gawith (Coromandel) 21-18.

Scotland international Ryan Burnett (Broadbeach, Aus) secured the first of the last eight berths in the men’s singles, ousting 2007 champion Tony Grantham (Browns Bay) 21-16 and Lawson, a two-time national singles champion, 21-9 along the way.

Burnett will meet Forbury Park’s Oliver Mason in the quarters after he accounted for Frankie Lim (Papakura), Raymond Martin (Victoria) and Craig Carter (Methven) in his three rounds of post-section play.

Joko Susilo (Andersons Bay) and Nicholas Tomsett (Mt Maunganui) will meet in the last eight after emerging from post-section play at Burnside.

Susilo beat Robert Bennett (Titahi Bay) 21-14 in the round of 16, after Bennett had earlier edged Le Lievre 21-20, while Tomsett overcame 2012 champion Peter Hodson (Stoke) 21-20 to secure a quarter-final berth.

Shaun Scott (Bannockburn), the men’s singles winner in 2011 and 2013, is another of the past singles champions to fall short of the last eight, losing 21-11 to Blackjack Andrew Kelly (Canterbury) in the round of 16.

Kelly will meet national team-mate Ali Forsyth (Clayton, Aus) in the last of the quarter-finals after Forsyth, a three-time national singles champion, overcame Curtin, another Blakjack, 21-15.

Defending champions Val Smith and Lisa Prideaux and the Blackjacks pairing of Katelyn Inch and Selina Goddard have safely advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s pairs, but a number of the other fancied combinations have missed out.

Fellow New Zealand internationals Jo Edwards and Kirsten Edwards have been beaten 12-11 on the last bowl by Debbie White and Ashleigh Jeffcoat in the second round of post-section play, before White and Jeffcoat went down 19-18 on an extra end to Johnsonville’s Dale Rayner and Kaaren Guilford.

Rayner and Guilford will face Inch and Goddard for a place in the semi-finals, while Smith and Prideaux will square-off against Nicole Toomey and Tannith Potgieter.

Toomey and Potgieter overcame Blackjacks coaches Sharon Sims and Gayle Melrose in the round of 16, after accounting for Waihopai’s Sarah Scott and Bronwyn Stevens.

2015 and 2016 champions Mandy Boyd and Angela Boyd were upset in the round of 32, going down 14-12 to Elmwood Park club-mates Chris Kibblewhite and Fiona Frew, who lost 19-15 to Clare Hendra and Tayla Bruce in the next round.

Hendra and Bruce will meet Natasha Russell and Leanne Poulson in the quarters after they beat Blackjack Wendy Jensen and Rachel Davies in the round of 16.

The final last eight meeting in the women’s quarters will see Linley O’Callaghan and Christine Buchanan face Gail Waitai and Linda Ralph.

O’Callaghan and Buchanan beat 2018 champions Bev Morel and Sherrie Cottle in the round of 32 before overcoming Serena Matthews and Joanna Cooper, while Waitai and Ralph won their post-section games in convincing fashion.

Post-section play continues tomorrow (Monday, January 6), with knock-out action in the women’s singles and men’s pairs, while qualifying begins in the disabled pairs.

The Summerset National Singles and Pairs are being held across 17 clubs in Canterbury, with the finals to be played at Papanui on Wednesday (January 8).
