A Woolston team comprising Skip John Mears, Brian Heemi, Robbie Osborne and Roger Glendinning (pictured left to right above with Keith Ballantyne, Clubs New Zealand at left and Terry Stewart, Tournament Convenor and Marty Lion, Papanui Club President at right) have won the prestigious Moase Cup played in Christchurch, with the final being played at the Papanui Club on Friday.
The final between the Mears team and a Papanui Club team of Eric Allison (s), Graeme Weeds, Ken Gray and Steve Hooper proved to be a tight affair with the score 19-16 after 21 hotly contested ends. The heads continually changed in fluctuating blustery conditions on a slick green.
The Mears team led throughout and looked to have the game well in hand after eleven ends with the score at 12-7 with all four members playing steadily. But the resolve of the Papanui Club team kept them in the game, with Papanui Club’s Skip Allison in particular playing some vital shots to keep the score at 17-16 after 19 ends.
The Mears Woolston Four kept their cool however, with a hard-earned single on the 20th end giving them a buffer of two. This was enough to hold out the fast-finishing Papanui Four who despite struggling somewhat, still had a chance on the final end.
The Woolston Four with Glendinning leading beautifully proved to be generally steadier. Allison’s team had to play many upshots to reduce the deficit on most ends.
Overall the Mears-skipped Woolston Four completed a fine tournament where they didn’t lose a game – a total of 11 games with one unplayed due to the team already having qualified.
This tournament, run annually by Clubs New Zealand will next be held in Hamilton in 2019.
