One player to catch the eye at the New Zealand bowls championships has been Naenae’s Lisa White.
The former New Zealand representative has qualified in all three disciplines and impressed on Tuesday with the ease with which she converted to the artificial surface of the indoor complex at Paritutu, after play had been transferred there when the heavens opened.
White was leading for fellow Wellingtonian Nicole Toomey (Victoria) in the pairs. But after a strong 28-10 opening win in post section over Cait Bassett (Burnside) and Rachel Davies (Allenton), the pair lost to Natarsha Grimshaw (Papakura) and Leanne Poulson (Pukekohe) 20-13 in a game of high quality.
White represented New Zealand at the 2012 World Bowls in Adelaide, winning a silver in the triples, but was not required for the Commonwealth Games two years later. Shortly after made herself unavailable.
“I felt I had lost form,” White said.
Since then there has been a significant transformation, with White developing into a top singles player.
Remarkably, she has won the two champion-of-champions singles and the last two open singles in Wellington. Last season she carried it on to claim the national club title and all told she now boasts 12 centre titles in the Capital.
“I feel like I have found some form in the last year. I think I’m probably close to being available again for New Zealand.”
White has also represented the country at indoor bowls, but her “focus was now on outdoor. It’s very difficult to do two at a time.”
White’s fours team at the nationals, which was undefeated in section play, comprises Jessie Macaw (Naenae), Natasha Russell (Clayton) and Kimberley Hemingway (Naenae).
On Wednesday White plays another former international, Selina Goddard (Carlton Cornwall), in her first game of post section in the singles at Paritutu.
