A record New Zealand Professional Bowls Association season started at the weekend with faces old and new coming to the fore. New Zealand number one Murray Glassey stamped his mark on the Hastings field once again winning the Scottish Singles qualifier for an amazing 7th time including the last four years in a row! Glassey came through a tough draw beating three Manawatu players and the well-performed Dean Drummond along the way. In contrast the World Indoor Pairs qualifier featured three players on debut in the final where John McLaughlin and Aaron Bryant will be the host pair at the NZ playoffs on September 7-9th beating Sheryl Viggers and Dave Henderson in the final.

New Zealand number three Andrew Kelly also repeated his 2015 success winning Dunedin’s Scottish Singles qualifier beating his regular pairs partner Andy McLean in the final. Kelly will pick up plenty of ranking points from the weekend also reaching the semifinal of the House of Travel Ranking singles event.

Branch coordinators did well in the World Indoor Pairs qualifiers with Hamilton coordinator Peter Davies teaming up with Peter McGirr to win their qualifier over fellow debutantes Steve Liddington and Mark Pene. And the re-opening of the Hamilton branch has created opportunities with the well-travelled Gary Cotter returning home to win the Scottish Singles qualifier over 2006-12 PBA member Alan Bowler in the final.

Wellington coordinator Richard Corry also won the World Indoor Pairs with skip Laurie Guy. Despite appearing in two Trans Tasman teams Guy has never played at a NZ Finals Weekend having lost 2 qualifier finals and won 6 non-qualifier Ranking events. They beat Victoria clubmates Tim Toomey and Mark Noble in the final. The Scottish Singles final was also an all Victoria affair with 2017 Rookie of the Year Ray Martin defeating promising junior James Fairhall in the final. Martin had a lucky escape in his first game of the day when Nick Buttar returning for his first PBA action since 2010 failed to draw to a short rebounded jack but made the most of it.

Invercargill coordinator Craig Merrilees could not quite match his northern colleagues going down in the World Indoor Pairs final with partner Shane Elliott to winners Simon Swale and Kerry Heffer. And it was also a new face in the winner’s circle in the Scottish Singles with Craig Tinker beating Bruce Ross.

21-year old debutante Jesse Russell beat Steve Cox returning from 9 years away from PBA in the Scottish Singles at the New Lynn club in Auckland but Cox did come away with some spoils picking up the World Indoor Pairs qualifier with partner Neil Fisher. They beat the seasoned pairing of Linda Ralph and Rob Ashton in the final.

Cathy Andrews had a breakthrough weekend persevering in PBA since 2006 without reaching a final but winning the New Plymouth qualifier for the Scottish Singles beating debutante Bruce Mummery and coming runner-up in the World Indoor Pairs qualifier with partner and NZ number one woman Rhonda Adams going down to more PBA newcomers in Wayne Hawkes and Bruce Hall.
