The Usher Cup for the winner of the 103rd West Coast Men’s Open 4’s ends up in hospital.
The tournament was going well for the 3 generation team of Danny Kelleher his son Nigeal and his 2 grandsons Ethan and Hamish from the Cobden Club they qualified for the top section and a chance to go one better than last year when they lost the final to Adrian Robbins’ Belfast team on the last end.
11pm Saturday night Dan ends up in Greymouth hospital with a traverling blood clot so a substitue was required and Danny’s old bowling mate Gus Connor was brought in.
A quick team meeting and a let’s do this for Danny and on to the green they march to take on Robbie Reed’s composite team part 1 done next Jack Lee’s team who had just knocked out the Robbins team another win for the Kelleher’s and into the semis to take on Jarred Forsyth’s Blaketown team and the dream continues and the final with D Jones and his composite team form Marlborough.
With Ethan (a former under 18 NZ player) at the helm the Cobden boys soon established a handy lead and with 12 year old Hamish, who is the youngest player to win the tournament, handling the pressure like a veteran the dream was fulfilled with a 17-9 victory.
