Elmwood Park’s Bev Morel continues to win Canterbury Bowls titles with her latest win being with Joyce McKinnel in the 2016/17 Womens Pairs Championship played at the end of last season.

Morel now has 35 Canterbury Centre Titles, well ahead of any other bowler – man or woman in the Canterbury Centre and it looks as though she’s not finished yet.

Already this season Morel with her Papanui club team of Sherrie Cottle, Theresa Woodham (Morel’s sister) and Margaret Pilkington has won the 27th South Island Chartered Clubs Womens Outdoor Bowls tournament for 2017, a tournament she now has won on 6 occasions.

Morel at aged 76 continues to train four days a week at a local gym and is a regular bowler at the Nationals where she has been a winner of the National Fours title on two occasions, 2006 and 1995.

Included in her wins are a NZ Silver Star Award which is awarded for 5 or more National, Club or Inter Centre titles.  She has also achieved many top performances in the Australian Sunshine Coast Annual Tournaments and the Annual Gold Coast Carnival including the Gold Coast Carnival’s Womens Pairs plus the Outstanding Lady Bowler Trophy which she was awarded in 2009.

Morel whilst now retired from Canterbury representative bowls is a regular performer in most of the Canterbury competitions and still loves playing competitively at the highest level.

Morel began playing outdoor bowls in 1981 at the Linwood Club after previously playing indoor bowls and representing Canterbury in that field.

She attributes her success to two ex Linwood players - Marie Watson and Denise Page, both top bowlers in their own right and the tremendous grounding they provided her with.
