Sue took up bowling 2004 and was instantly addicted to a game that she could play for the rest of her life. As per all other sports she has played, she wanted to learn the laws so she could better understand the game. She found that there was a shortage of umpires within the sport of Bowls in New Zealand and was encouraged by a couple of umpires at her club to do the training required to become an umpire. The rest is history for Sue.

Sue qualified as an umpire 2008. In 2012 Sue was given the opportunity to sit the international umpires exam. This opened the door to umpire at international events. She was lucky to get selected in 2013 and 2014 for the Champion of Champion Singles in Christchurch. It was tournaments like these that got Sue hooked on officiating at an international level. “You get the best seat in the house to watch the best bowlers in the world play”

Sue was selected for the Commonwealth Games, which so far has been the highlight of her career. She was recently selected to officiate at World Bowls in 2020, which is the pinnacle event for International Bowls.

Sue’s wish is to develop some more New Zealand umpires so that New Zealand can have a contingent at all international events on this side of the world.
